Understanding Pokémon TCG Pocket rarities

Rarity in Pokémon TCG Pocket works a little differently to regular Pokémon card rarity, but the principles are much the same. Just like in the physical trading card game, there is a tiered list of different rarity categories, with some cards that are much harder to get hold of than others.

However, Pokémon TCG Pocket marks these categories with different symbols to the base game and also has some unique quirks, like secret cards that can only be unlocked through certain in-game accomplishments.

Pokémon TCG Pocket also includes detailed information on the drop rate of each card type, allowing us to calculate precisely how likely you are to encounter each card type in a single pack opening.

But to fully grok the numbers, you must understand how a pack is structured. Each pack contains five cards, but cards 1-3 are guaranteed to be low rarity, single diamond cards. All the rare Pokémon TCG Pocket cards will be found in slots four and five, with the fifth card giving you better odds at something cool.

Rarity Cards 1-3 Card 4 Card 5 Chance to appear in pack
One Diamond 100% 0% 0% 100%
Two Diamonds 0% 90% 60% 96%
Three Diamonds 0% 5% 20% 24%
Four Diamonds 0% 1.667% 6.664% 8.22%
One Star 0% 2.572% 10.288% 12.6%
Two Star 0% 0.5% 2% 2.49%
Three Star 0% 0.222% 0.888% 1.1%
Crown 0% 0.04% 0.16% 0.2%

What is a Pokémon TCG Pocket God Pack?

God packs (officially called rare packs) are Pokémon TCG Pocket packs where all the cards have a gold star rarity or higher. However, your odds at opening one of these is very, very low. Each pack has a 0.05% chance to be a god pack, so these show up about 1 in every 2,000 boosters.

They’re named after a very similar concept in the paper TCG, though physical god packs only appear in the Japanese version of the game.

If you are lucky enough to find a god pack, here are the odds of each card rarity showing up. Note that each card slot in god packs is alike. Card 1 is just as likely to be a Crown Pokémon as Card 5.

Rarity Chance for each card slot
One Star 42.105%
Two Star 47.368%
Three Star 5.263%
Crown 5.263%

Due to the different numbers of each rarity type in the card pool, the way this works out is that each individual card has an identical 5.263% chance to appear.

The rarest Pokémon TCG Pocket cards

Right now, there are only a handful of examples of the rarest Pokémon TCG Pocket card types in the game. Therefore, we thought it might be helpful to include a full list of the biggest rarities, so you know what you’re hunting for.Pokemon TCG Pocket Three Star immersive cards

Three-Star Rarity (Immersive) cards

The second rarest card type in Pokémon TCG Pocket is the three star card. Three star cards all feature ‘immersive’ art, which swoops into the frame and shows you the card from a whole new animated perspective. It’s even accompanied by unique music to ensure those endorphins are flowing.

Three Star cards have just over a 1% chance to appear in packs, but only one is available in each type of pack. You’d probably guess this, but to avoid any confusion, the Mewtwo EX is found in the Mewtwo pack, the Pikachu EX in the Pikachu pack and the Charizard EX in the Charizard pack.

There’s also a fourth card in this category: Mew. This card is awarded if you complete a secret mission to finish the rest of the Kanto Pokédex. Collect all 150 other Pokémon in any form and you’ll get Mew.

Pokemon TCG Pocket gold crown cards

Crown Rarity (Gold) Cards

Crown cards are the rarest Pokémon TCG Pocket cards currently in the game. Just like with three star cards, there are only three of them right now (discounting the secret Mew), and in fact they represent the same three cards: Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu.

You only have a miniscule 0.2% chance to find one of these in a pack, and unlike three star rarity cards, crown cards aren’t pack exclusive: any of the three can show up in any pack.

There are pros and cons to this, but at the end of the day what it means is it’s harder to go hunting for the crown card you need.
