We once described Mega Darkrai EX as the most metal Pokémon card, and it does a pretty great job of getting across the grimdark vibes of the Pitch Black expansion. This nightmarish card has taken a bit of a tumble in price, though, dropping from being worth roughly $300 (£221) to roughly $200 ($147). Let’s take a look at what happened to the price of the edgiest Pokémon card.
According to price data from TCGplayer, a near mint copy of the SIR Darkrai was worth $301(£222) on the 18th July, the day after the release of Pitch Black. The card is currently worth $208 (£153), a fall of 31%. Darkrai is still definitely pricey, but it’s a far less expensive Pokémon card than it was before.
So, what’s behind this price climbdown? As with any story related to TCG finances, there are no unambiguous answers, and it’s impossible to say without indulging in at least a little bit of speculation. With that said, this does follow a general pattern where exciting new chase cards gradually decline in value, as the expansion that introduced them becomes increasingly available. Both Chaos Rising and Perfect Order saw similar results, as the SIR versions of Mega Greninja and Mega Zygarde from those sets lost value over time in the months after they were released.
Additionally, the Pokémon TCG’s upcoming 30th Celebration expansion is generating an incredible amount of hype. This is swallowing up a lot of focus which would otherwise have been directed towards Pitch Black. Because of this, the attention of the Pokémon TCG community is directed firmly towards the future, leaving this twisted and brooding dark type to the wayside as an exciting anniversary party approaches.
