At Comic-Con, D&D Honor Among Thieves writer-director Jonathan Goldstein revealed a sequel exists, but may never see the light of day.
Apparently, the sequel to the 2023 D&D movie, Honor Among Thieves, has already been written. All it needs is a green light, but, as writer-director Jonathan Goldstein revealed at Comic-Con this year, there are a “number of financial reasons” it may never end up being made. Which just goes to show that there is no justice for Jarnathan.
Honor Among Thieves Sequel – What Might Have Been
It is a hallmark of the strength of Honor Among Thieves that people keep stumbling into it and discovering, “wait, this is actually good?” And it is. The D&D movie is currently sitting on a 91/92 critic/audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even made money, grossing $205 million, though compared to its $150 million budget, I’m sure that’s not enough profit to justify making another.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Jonathan Goldstein, who co-wrote and co-directed the D&D movie with John Francis Daley, revealed that they were hired to write a sequel; and in fact, did write a sequel, but that it may never come to light.
“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of fiancial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”

Among the number of “financial reasons” stymying the D&D movie sequel is the split of EOne from Hasbro. You might recall this same turmoil was one of the reasons Hasbro scrapped its live-action D&D series plans, back in 2024.
We may never see a sequel to Honor Among Thieves, but as far as we know, there’s still a live-action series in the works at Netflix. Though as Hasbro faces the challenges and financial reality of its various canceled games and closed studios, and the accompanying impairment charge, who knows what else may never see the light of day.
Still, I can’t help but wonder what that sequel would be like. Maybe one day we’ll get lucky enough to see what could have been, and enjoy the script and imagine.
