The independent fantasy comics publisher Battle Quest has signed with Universal Distribution for distribution to the hobby/game market as it prepares to launch a new series based on the game Summoner Wars.  According to its website, the publisher is also distributed to the direct market by Lunar Distribution, as part of its Massive Indies group, and to the book channel by IPG.

Battle Quest’s Summoner Wars comic will be plotted by Battle Quest and Plaid Hat Games and co-written by Paul Cornell (Saucer Country, Doctor Who) and Justin Zimmerman (The 27 Run), with art by Patrick Macchi and colors by Morry Hollowell. Macchi and Plaid Hat artist Martin Abel will do the covers, and Macchi’s variant cover of Summoner Wars #1 will be polybagged with an exclusive playable card.

“Battle Quest is focused on finding new ways to immerse people in adventures they are passionate about, and signing with Universal represents a major step forward in doing just that” Battle Quest Publisher Drew Kafoury said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “The next big IP could very well come out of the tabletop and RPG space, and we want to help champion those stories as well as enhance the gamers’ experience in their favorite spaces.”

Following the debut of Summoner Wars, Battle Quest will publish The Trident of Aurelia Omnibus, by Hugo Award winning writer Lee Moyer and artist Melissa Spandri (see “Battle Quest to Publish First Comic by ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Artist Lee Moyer“).  This omnibus will collect the third volume for the first time and will be released in November 2026 with an MSRP of $24.95.

Plaid Hat released two expansions for Summoner Wars 2E in 2024 (see “‘The Filth’ Returns in ‘Summoner Wars 2E’”).
