Graphix, the graphic novel imprint of Scholastic, has struck a deal with Tezuka Productions to adapt five manga by Osamu Tezuka for young readers. The move comes shortly after the publisher released the third volume of Unico, another Tezuka adaptation by Sam Sattin and the artist team Gurihiru (see “Scholastic Announces First Graphix Manga”). The five new manga to be adapted are Astro Cat (also known as Atom Cat), Princess Knight, The Three-Eyed One, Triton of the Sea, and Zero Man. Sattin will be involved in all the projects, according to David Saylor, Scholastic’s SVP, Graphix & Creative, who announced the new titles at a special event for librarians and educators at Scholastic headquarters.
Astro Cat will be the first manga to be released. “It originally was a spinoff of Astro Boy,” Sattin said, “but then it kind of took on its own life and has this really fun, vivacious kind of ludicrous tone to it.” The original was licensed by Digital Manga Publishing in 2013 and published as a single volume.
Graphix has also licensed two manga to be published directly, without adaptation: Chuck and the Girl, a one-shot about a girl who moves from the U.S. to Japan and adopts a cat who helps her adjust to the changes in her life, coming in Spring 2027; and Snow Fox at the Northern Fort, which Graphix manga editor Nikolai Muth described as “a really cute romp in the snow – a snow fox trying to connect with people,” and will launch in Fall 2027. While most Graphix manga are in color, these two will be in black and white.
Saylor noted that the third volume of Unico debuted at number 121 on the USA Today best-seller list. “The arc of the of the sales has been really amazing,” he said, “and the way people have responded to it has been amazing. I think partly what kids are responding to is that they’re not afraid of the complexity of the story and they like the fact that there’s hard stuff to deal with.”
