Kodansha’s San Diego Comic-Con announcements included a new box set, a spinoff of a classic series, and a new series by a popular creator, all due out in spring 2027.

Subaru and Subaru, by Shuichi Shigeno, is a spinoff of Shigeno’s classic street-racing manga Initial D, which Kodansha began publishing in omnibus editions in 2024 (see “Kodansha to Bring Back ‘Initial D’“).  Actually, it’s a sequel to the Initial D sequel MF Ghost, which Kodansha began publishing in North America in March 2026.  Subaru and Subaru is set in the present day and stars two new drivers, Subaru Sato and Subaru Kudo, who are competing in the MFG event that was central to MF Ghost.  The series is rated 16+, and the first volume will be released on April 6 2027, with an MSRP of $14.99.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, by Saka Mikami, is an opposites-attract romcom about a girl who goes to an elite high school and a scary-looking but good-hearted boy who attends the much rougher school next door.  The series, which is rated 13+, has been adapted into an anime, and the first volume was one of Kodansha’s top three best-selling manga in comic shops in 2025 (see “2025 Was Kodansha’s Best Year in Comic Shops”).  Kodansha is bundling the first six volumes into a box set with an exclusive set of 10 art cards in a pastry-themed box with a magnetic closure.

Gamon Sakurai is the creator of Ajin: Demi-Human, which was made into an anime (see “DVD Round-Up”), and now he’s back with a new science fiction action series, The Pool, featuring a security squad on an alien plant who venture into an abandoned mine to rescue an excavation crew who were trapped there and have to travel through the mine to get to an escape vehicle while trying not to awaken the monster within.  The manga, which is rated 16+, is complete in one volume and will be released on April 13, 2027, with an MSRP of $22.95.

The Cat and Dog’s Nine-Tailed Lives, by Maki and artist Hamuhamu, is the story of an elderly cat and dog who are transformed into yokai, which means they are immortal… but their beloved owner is not.  The story is complete in one volume and is rated for ages 8 and up.
