One of the signs you’re going up in the world of D&D is when you literally go up, like with these five magic items for flying.

One of the surest signs your characters are making it to the big leagues is when they gain the ability to fly. For a number of reasons. First, it makes combat more complicated because now there’s a third dimension to travel in. Second, you can start taking on more varieties of foes, because you can engage flying enemies directly in melee. Third, it typically opens up more of the world.

So keep your eyes out for magic items like these ones, because they’re sure signs that your character is going up in the world, figuratively and literally.

Winged Boots

Perhaps one of the most classic magic items are winged boots. Inspired by the same kind of footwear that Mercury/Hermes wore, these magic boots have wings. When you wear them and take a magic action to spend one of the boots’ four charges to gain a fly speed of 30 for an hour. No concentration or anything required.

Better still there’s plenty of safety built into these magic items. If the duration wears out, you start gently floating back to the ground at a rate of 30 feet per round until you land.

Cloak of the Bat

The Cloak of the Bat is for stealthy flying. And mostly for wearing at night, though anywhere with dim light or total darkness will do. With this cloak, whenever you grip the edges (no action required, just free hands) you can fly at a speed of 40. Which is pretty impressive, especially since you also gain advantage on Stealth Checks while wearing the cloak.

It’s like a tactical infiltration glider but you know, fantasy style.

Quaal’s Feather Token (Bird)

Of course, not every magic item that can help you fly directly gives you the ability to fly. For instance, the Bird version of the set of Quaal’s Feather Tokens, becomes a Roc. And that’s spelled correctly, I’m talking about the big bird. This big bird can fly up to 144 miles in a single day carrying up to 550 pounds on its back, or half that, carrying up to 1,000 pounds.

A great way to traverse the world map, untroubled by bandits and other random encounters on the ground.

Broom of Flying

This is almost like having a flying mount. A Broom of Flying has to be activated with a Magic Action, but once activated, you can ride around on it at a fly speed of 50 feet, which is exceptionally fast. But you can also send the broom flying to a destination specified by you within a mile of wherever you are, and you can call it back with a single action.

Use this to fly to the top of a castle, stash the broom, and call it back whenever you need to make good your escape.

Wings of Flying

Finally, the Wings of Flying. This magical cloak can transform into wings as a Magic Action. When so transformed, you gain a fly speed of 60 feet for up to an hour. At the end of that hour, though, you will fall. So you might want to be careful about the time.
