Hannah Rose May, creator of The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, is back with a new horror series to be published by IDW Dark. Fatal Fest, by May and artist Andrea Scalmazzi, takes place at a film festival run by a legendary horror director, Frank Finch, and his production company. The six up-and-coming filmmakers competing at the festival soon learn that Finch has a very practical approach: He believes that filmmakers must have experienced true fear in order to recreate it for the audience, and that means they have to be willing to kill for their craft. The series mixes survival horror with sardonic commentary on the entertainment industry and intellectual property rights. IDW has not announced a launch date.

“I’ve wanted to tell this story for years,” May said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “It lives at the intersection of everything I love: horror, Hollywood and our cultural obsession with IP. I’ve been dying to explore what happens when obsession collides with violent ambition and with Fatal Fest we get to dial that all the way up to the most terrifying degree.”

“It’s bold, bloody, incredibly clever, and completely unapologetic in its vision,” added Senior Group Editor Heather Antos. “From the first page, we knew readers were in for something unforgettable. Hannah and Andrea have created a world that feels equal parts Hollywood Horror satire, psychological thriller, and pure nightmare fuel.”

Blumhouse-Atomic Monster announced in February that they are working on a feature film adaptation of The Exorcism at 1600 Penn (see “‘The Exorcism at 1600 Penn’ Optioned”). May has also written the sequel, The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace, as well as another series, Smile: For the Camera. All three are published by IDW (see “IDW Dark Announces New Titles”).
