Pan-Universal Galactic Worldwide will launch a new series of Marvel Comics making-of hardcovers with Marvel: Behind the Panels of Secret Wars, a behind-the-scenes look at the 2015 crossover event.  PUG-W signed a licensing deal with Marvel last year that gave it the right to produce a range of Marvel products (see “PUG-W Signs Marvel Licensing Deal“).

The first stage of the launch is a Kickstarter campaign, currently underway with a retailer tier.  “There will be a trade release, we’re working on what that will look like, but I can say for sure that you’ll see this on bookshelves in 2026,” PUG-W Nate Murray told ICv2.  “For our friendly local comic shops that want the earliest copies available, there is a retailer tier in the campaign now, which gives retailers the Kickstarter version of the book at a discount, as well as the A set of these Bite-Sized comic covers and a mini Secret Wars short box for their stores!  This is a brand new category we’re very excited about that is rolling out with this campaign, and these sets are only ever going to be available there. Bite-Sized is something we’re really passionate about, you can’t help but smile when you look at one of these mini short boxes on your desk.”

Written by editor and publishing executive Ellie Pyle (see “Staffing Changes“), the 300-page 11.7″ x 16.5” oversize hardcover volume brings together the stories of creative summits and planning sessions, pitches that never saw print, new character designs, and insights from talent, including series creators Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, Jason Aaron, Keiran Gillen, Gerry Duggan and Marvel VP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.

The 2015 Secret Wars event (see “Marvel Launching New ‘Secret Wars’“) built on the 1984 Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars event by Jim Shooter and artists Mike Zeck and Bob Layton, and has inspired concepts used in upcoming Marvel films.

The new series strives to treat comics with the same level of attention previously reserved for films.  “[W]ith the Behind The Panels line of books we wanted to present comic books with the same stature we might with a film,” PUG-W Editor-In-Chief John Barber said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “We treat the comics with the reverence and depth they deserve and show what goes into making a huge event comic from the mouths of the people who were there.”
