The full episode list for The Mighty Nein season 1, the next animated Dungeons and Dragons series from the Critical Role team, have been revealed. The titles and summaries shared to TheMovieDB confirm that the debut season will largely be setup for the grander story – and it’ll feature plenty of moments that we never got to see in the original campaign.

We know from an earlier Polygon interview that, unlike Vox Machina season 4, The Mighty Nein season 1 would have longer, more character-focused episodes. That same interview confirmed that a lot of the first season would be ‘session zero’ content. Basically, we’re going to spend some time delving into the origins of how the group came together, as well as the backstories and relationships of individual characters – largely stuff that, in the original campaign, was handled off-screen before the show kicked off.

Episode one, Mote of Possibility will establish the war in Wildemount that, while not so prominent in the early episodes of the campaign, feeds crucial story arcs later on. It also sets up what Beau was up to pre-campaign, as well as the beginning of a friendship between Caleb and Nott the Brave. That latter detail is interesting because, based on the summary, it seems the pair will meet in a different manner than they did in the actual play.

Next is Who Will You Be?, which highlights the origins of Fjord and Jester and the way they’re thrown together. We first see Mollymauk in episode three, The Fletching & Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities. Here we start to see some events from the actual play take place, though it sounds like they have been re-arranged to better fit the structure of a TV series. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say there will be plenty of chaos at the carnival.

That chaos continues in episode four, aptly titled The Mighty Nein. After being framed for a crime, the group must start working together in a more official capacity. As their origin story properly begins, the episode also introduces two crucial characters that originally appeared much later in the campaign – Essek and Trent Ikithon.

Episode five, Little Spark, explores more of Beau’s shady investigations, while Many Gifts sees the party in the thick of their first story arc, dealing with the criminal underbelly of Zadash. This continues with the seventh episode, Belonging and comes to a head in the final episode, The Zadash Job.

It sounds like the season will touch on the first of the campaign’s six story arcs, but we’re not convinced it will cover it entirely. The Legend of Vox Machina deftly tackled a story arc per season, but The Mighty Nein sounds like it’ll take its time with the storytelling. Still, we won’t know for sure until episodes start airing on November 19.
