BOOM! Studios will publish the first new Mouse Guard comic in three years under its Archaia imprint in March 2025. Written by series creator David Petersen, with art by Gabriel Rodríguez, the story is a prequel set at the earliest point in the Mouse Guard series so far and depicts the forging of the Black Axe and the moment when it was handed to Baldrick, who sets off on an epic journey. Mouse Guard: Dawn of the Black Axe #1 will be released on March 19, 2025, with a main cover by Rodríguez and variant covers by Petersen and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers artist Goñi Montes.
“I’ll continue to work on the next volume in the main Mouse Guard series: The Weasel War of 1149, but I also hope this is first of many more Mouse Guard books like this one, where I get to explore the other past wielders of the Black Axe with exciting and extremely talented collaborators like Gabe,” Petersen said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
The most recent episode of the Eisner Award-winning series was released in 2021 (see “Preview: ‘Mouse Guard: The Owlhen Caregiver’”).
