In the wake of the recent U.S. Presidential election, there’s been a lot of talk about the possible impact of tariffs on the comics business. To get a better baseline for those discussions, we had our crack researcher go through a stack of recent comics to identify where they came from, and the answer is not in the U.S., for the most part. The only major comic publisher with at least some U.S. supply was Marvel.
Here’s where recent comics were printed, by publisher:
- Marvel Comics – Canada; Ohio & Pennsylvania (U.S.)
- DC Comics – Canada
- Image Comics – Canada
- BOOM! Studios – Canada
- Dark Horse Comics – Canada
- Dynamite Entertainment – Canada
- IDW Publishing – Canada
- Mad Cave Studios – Canada
These printing locations were listed in periodical comics, not graphic novels. The amount and timing of any new tariffs on products imported from Canada are unknown, but if they are imposed, it looks like there will be an impact on publisher costs, and presumably on retail prices as well.
