Praise the Emperor – Space Marine 2 has PVP multiplayer!

The upcoming Warhammer 40k action game Space Marine 2 is going to have both PVP and PVE multiplayer. Both new modes were revealed during Games Workshop’s ‘Skulls’ showcase for licensed Warhammer videogames.

A new trailer – embedded below – gives us our first glimpse of the new game modes for Space Marine 2. ‘Eternal War’ is a new six vs six multiplayer mode with Annihilation, Seize Ground, and Capture & Control game types, that pits a team of loyalist Space Marines against rival Chaos Space Marines.

Meanwhile the three player ‘Operations Mode’ consists of self-contained non-campaign levels for three player coop, joining the previously-revealed Space Marine 2 coop multiplayer story campaign.

The new modes both give players access to six classes, “ranging from the unflinching Bulwark and his Combat Shield to the stealthy Sniper and his Camo Cloak”. We’re not sure if weapon options will be totally locked for each class, a class-based selection, or free to pick. It does look like the classes and weapons are symmetrical on both sides – the trailer contains a Death Guard marine armed with a (stinky wooden) combat shield the exact same shape as the Space Marine one.

You’ll be able customize your Space Marines “from helm to greaves, with a wide selection of colours, heraldry decals, pauldrons, gauntlets, and more”. Inevitably there’s going to be a Season Pass that grants access to “even more cosmetics”, but “new content like missions, enemies, and weapons will be available to all players through regular free updates”.

While we’re braced for specific Space Marine Chapters and types of Space Marine armor to be locked behind that pass, we hope that the choice of how to color your toons is totally unlocked. Being able to “paint” your dudes is a core part of any Warhammer 40k game.
