Some new volumes bring a new look to the list of the Top 20 Kids graphic novels in the book channel, based on Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for September (8/27/23 – 9/30/23) provided to ICv2.
The chart is slightly more diverse than in September 2022, when there were four non-Graphix titles in the top 20 (see “September 2022 NPD BookScan“). Now there are five, plus a Scholastic graphic novel that seems to be outside the imprint. That book, Cat on the Run, by Aaron Blabey, is the only real newcomer to the chart. It’s an action comedy about a cat who is a social media diva, and it’s aimed at readers 7 to 10, the same cohort that can’t get enough of Dog Man.
The other four non-Graphix titles are all new volumes of old favorites: Volume 3 of Hooky and InvestiGators: All Tide Up, both September releases, are in second and third place, respectively. Further down the chart are Narwhal and Jelly: A Super Scary Narwhaloween, FGTEEV: Out of Time!, and Big Nate: Move it or Lose It. These are all popular ongoing series that pop on the chart only when new volumes come out, except for FGTEEV!, which tends to hang around; this is the third month in the Top 20 for that title.
Speaking of books that hang around, Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea is back in the top spot for the seventh month in a row. Three volumes of Heartstopper are on the chart, possibly boosted by the second season of the Netflix series, although some readers may be playing catch-up, as the fifth volume is due out in December (see “‘Heartstopper’ Update“). A new volume of Five Nights at Freddy’s debuts at number 4, and two older volumes are back in the top 20 as well; this is another series that is getting a boost from media, as the movie tie-in will premiere on October 27.
