Marvel’s ComiXology-Based App to Go Dark on June 2

The Marvel Comics app, which is operated by comiXology, will shut down on June 2, 2023.  Sales of digital comics on the app will end on May 2, 2023, and comics purchased on the Marvel Comics app will be available after that date on the Marvel Unlimited digital service.  Users will not have to purchase a Marvel Unlimited subscription to access their comics, but iOS users will have to create a Marvel account and link their Marvel Comics app to it in order to read their comics in Marvel Unlimited. Android users can skip this step as they already have a Marvel account.

Digital redemption codes from Marvel’s print comics purchased in comic shops will now be redeemed in the Marvel Unlimited app.

Marvel Unlimited is a subscription service that does not allow purchase of individual comics; Marvel’s website points would-be purchasers to Amazon for single issues and other services such as Apple iBooks, Google Play, and Nook for graphic novels.

ComiXology was a pioneering digital comics service that dominated the digital comics marketplace before being purchased by Amazon in 2014 (see “Bloodbath at ComiXology”).  The Marvel app was one of the apps on the iPad when it was launched in 2010 (see “Marvel Has iPad App”), and the Android app was launched the following year (see “Marvel Unveils an Android App”).  Marvel Unlimited was launched in 2007 (see “Marvel Launches Subscription Site”)
