A print edition of Starlog, the venerable science fiction and fantasy fan magazine, will be launched this month in a new annual magazine format.  The new magazine is staffed by former iO9 founding editor Annalee Newitz as Editor-in-Chief, Phil Nobile Jr. as SVP of Editorial, Meredith Borders as Senior Editor, and Jason Kauzlarich as Senior Art Director.

The 100-page magazine will feature a cover by Gabriel Yeganyan and retail for $19.99.  Contents will include a look at the art and science of Star Trek, analyses of Dune and The Lord of the Rings, a look back at how the magazine covered the original Star Wars trilogy as it was released, real-world reporting on soft robotics and orbital space farming and looks behind the screens at the worldbuilding of Dungeons & Dragons and the practical construction of pop culture’s most famous starships, and much more.

“We’re honoring the fannish legacy of the original magazine and bringing it into the future with hopeful, awe-inspiring, and scientifically grounded explorations of where humanity could go next,” Newitz said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

This is the 50th anniversary of the 1976 launch of Starlog as a monthly magazine by Kerry O’Quinn and Norm Jacobs, with longtime executive Rita Eisenstein joining the company shortly thereafter. In addition to newsstand distribution, Starlog was widely distributed to comic stores from its earliest issues, building a lasting bond with the fan community.  The magazine ended publication in 2009 after 374 issues and over 25,000 pages.  In 2020, It was sold along with sister publication Fangoria and Gorezone to Tara Ansley and Abhi Goel, who now own the titles through Fangoria Holdings.

The new magazine is only one element of the revived Starlog brand, which launched earlier this year with The Starlog Podcast, hosted by Jordan Hoffman and Dave Gonzales, and The Lodestar, a weekly newsletter written by Hoffman.
