ComicBooks for Troops (CB4T) distributed 100,000 graphic novels to military families in five different locations, the largest single donation ever for the charity, which is the sister organization of ComicBooks 4 Kids.

The impetus for the megadrop came at a ComicsPRO reception, when CB4K founder Mark Weiss shared a table with Gabriel Valentin, the creator of the Digital Lizards of Doom graphic novel series (published by Papercutz).  Valentin told Weiss that 60% of American fourth-graders are not reading at their grade level, a problem that is exacerbated for military families who have to relocate frequently.  With help from a private investor, and distribution and fulfillment via Papercutz parent Mad Cave, CB4T donated 100,000 graphic novels via service agencies at five different locations in Illinois, North Carolina, Colorado, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

“We wanted to do something impactful that had never been done on this scale and make a positive educational difference for those reading these books,” Weiss said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “Once I heard about the Hopkins study and their follow on pilot with multiple schools, we knew we had the right product to work with.  A few phone calls to some of the organizations we support and we found ourselves actually limiting this to 100,000 books!”

ComicBooks for Troops is the sister organization to ComicBooks for Kids (CB4K), which provides comics to children in hospitals and cancer centers. Both charities are 501(c)3 organizations.  CB4K will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary.

CB4K also works with comics retailers and DC Comics to produce special variant covers for its charity work (see “ComicBooks for Kids Unveils New Retailer-Sponsored Covers”).
