The three launch issues of the new Marvel Midnight Universe have collectively sold over 1 million copies and second printings have been ordered before the first issues are released at midnight on October 7 (see “Same-Day Launch“), Marvel announced. The second printing covers are by Steve Beach (Midnight Spider-Man), Dike Ruan (Midnight X-Men) and Kev Walker (Midnight Fantastic Four).
The three books, Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight Spider-Man, are benefiting from a months-long marketing push, extensive availability of art in advance of release (see “Preview: Interior Art“), and the hope that this new horror universe could be for Marvel what the Absolute universe has been for DC Comics: a giant jumping-on point for new readers.
Other publishers have piggybacked on the midnight release for the three Marvel titles, the only Marvel titles that will be released on October 7, turning it into even more of an event: Oni, Image, and Ignition have all announced titles available at the same time (see “Ignition Adds ‘Dinner Date’”).
Marvel’s Dan Buckley, the Executive Editor of the new universe launch, will be speaking on the Future of Comics at the ICv2 Insider Talks at New York Comic Con (see “Future of Comics“).
