Tabletop RPGs can be about literally anything, despite what the most popular fantasy and sci-fi titles may suggest. The medium exists to give players a system to play out a plethora of stories in whatever setting they can imagine. From the gothicpunk of World of Darkness to the self-explanatory “Jonathan Frakes Wants Your Attention, And You Must Not Give It To Him,”” TTRPGs thrive on off-the-wall ideas.
And this lucha libre RPG is brimming with main event level creativity.
Circo, Maroma y Teatro or CMT: a Lucha Libre RPG is a rules-lite TTRPG all about the loveably loud world of lucha. Every corner of the world has its own flavor of pro wrestling, but few are as influential upon wrestling’s aesthetic and storytelling than Mexico. In CMT, you play as Luchadores instead of the typical DnD classes. As a fan of the beautifully sweaty artform that is professional wrestling, I can confirm this RPG just gets it.
In a writeup explaining the system’s interactions, creator Mario Valencia talks about the Grab move depending on your specialty. Grab can either mean a wrestling hold if you’re strong, or keeping someone’s attention if you’re more on the charisma side. If you’re curious how the latter is useful, that’s the type of wrestling magic that leads to distractions and dirty moves.
But it’s not just the acrobatic performances of lucha present in the TTRPG. CMT also taps into the pulpy fantasy aspects of the artform. As fans of the much-missed Lucha Underground can attest, the craft is no stranger to Aztec demigods and dark magic.
If you’re a lucha fan who loves some of the best tabletop RPGs such as Blades in the Dark and Lancer, you should check out CMT on itch.io here.
