Feast your eyes on this gaming table, a gory, gloopy delight by YouTuber Trent Holbrook/Miscast. It is, in a word, Chaos.
Intending to depict the Realm of Chaos from Warhammer: The Old World, Holbrook spent many months singlehandedly putting together the most lavishly, disgustingly detailed table he could, documenting the process on his hobby vlog channel.
The creator was inspired by the art of Warhammer legend Ian Miller, particularly his illustrations from the classic Realm of Chaos: Slave to Darkness book. These scenes are densely packed with detail, while still containing recognizable mundane structures like windmills, bridges, and gargoyles. The immense board is covered in cages, twisting trees, alien starfish, and little vignettes of abstract story-telling.
Monstrous teeth sprout from one corner, while towers of ramshackle buildings loom in another. The whole thing looks like it’s oozing, and judging by how many videos there are about repairing the thing, this work of chaos seems intent on tearing itself apart.
Trent Holbrook, who runs the channel Miscast, is a wargamer and mini-maker who creates videos focused on worldbuilding, terrain, kitbashing, and narrative gameplay. He calls this the most ambitious project he’s ever done, and in one video implies this will be the last time he attempts something on this scale, at least singlehandedly.
He adds that he thought the project would take a week or two to complete, but in fact it took closer to a year.
The Realm of Chaos table made its gaming debut at Tatthammer last month, with around 30 people getting to enjoy narrative-style games in the setting. This event, held annually in Melbourne, describes itself as “Australia’s only fan-run Warhammer tattoo flash event”, which I’m fairly confident they are correct about.
I haven’t been able to find one video summing up the whole process, but the full majesty of the table is captured well in the one above.
