Goatboy here and we all know a new Codex Space Marines is coming.  Here’s my list of minis that should be safe to buy while we await the new 11th book.

That 11th Edition Codex Space Marines is just around the corner.  This will most likely flip a lot of stuff in the game for the Space Marines and if you are a new player to the game or looking to start a Space Marine army it can be a daunting task figuring out what you should buy right now.  There is a big chance for things to go away, get an updated kit, or just not work the way it is working right now. Here’s what the smart money is safe to snatch off the shelves while we wait.

Plain Jane Vanilla Space Marines

Let’s start with the regular ole Space Marines.  I get a feeling some of the old stuff is going to go away like the Rhino, Vindicator, and Predator.  Those kits are long in the tooth and just has a really good chance to just stay as a Chaos Option.  The Vindicator and Predator are important kits to the Space Marines but there is some safe stuff you can buy as you build up your Armageddon Marines.

Any of the Primaris Tanks should be fine to get. This would be your Repulsor, Gladiator, Impulsor, and Storm Speeder.  All of these kits would be good first options to get your paint  brushes wet and figuring out how you want to paint your floating box.  On the infantry side of things you should be safe with most of the Special Characters especially for the Ultramarines. If you are looking for something Generic to pick up the Bladeguard are most likely staying as well as the Eradicators as good options to pick up.

Blood Angels

Onto the other Chapters will look at the Blood Angels. They had a big refresh this past year so I think almost anything you buy that is Blood Angels specific will be safe to grab.  I have high hopes we see a Librarian Dreadnought in the future so picking up a Redemptor or Brutalis might not be a good option right now.   The Sanguinary Guard are really fun to build and paint as well as going with some of the updated Death Company kits.

Dark Angels

The Dark Angels also are mostly redone with only a simple exception in the Ravenguard/Jetbike department.  If you are wanting to go the Terminator route the Deathwing Knights are very safe as well as some of the character options within.  I am hoping we see a new Ezekiel as his design is cool it just needs an update.  I wouldn’t touch any of the Raven Guard bikes as the new Outrider kit is coming and I am sure will see a newly refreshed Black Knight kit in the future.

Space Wolves

The Space Wolves had a massive update so almost everything they have should be good to purchase except for the following two kits.  I would expect a new Wulfen kit to come at some point as well as the Thunder Wolf Calvary.  The Wulfen kit seems to have a lot of power in the new edition with cover savings being good for them and their buffs doing well for the army.  The Thunder Wolf have one of the worst  Keywords still with Calvary so getting a pile of them is not going to be good for your wallet as well as your game plan on the table top.  I was also hoping for a new Bjorn at some point as he should just be a simple Redemptor sprue upgrade to get on the table.

Black Templars

The Black Templars got a really big refresh and I don’t think will see much new stuff for them.  They like to utilize all the stuff the Space Marines got so if it is good for that army it should be fine for your lunatics. It feels  like this army is an easier one to grab pieces for with just looking at ways to get fat Crusader squads and Sword Brethren.

Deathwatch – kind of a minefield…

The Deathwatch are another weird army and I am not sure if it is worth it to get heavily involved in them.  If you can build something that utilizes some of the regular Space Marine stuff so you can use them if the army goes away again will be important.  This might be something that gets folded back into an Agents of the Imperium update if they ever come out with one.  It is a weird army that benefits if you have collected for a while but when a new player has to get all the pieces to this it gets harder.

Grey Knights – Just Sit Tight

Finally we have the Grey Knights and there is no way they won’t be coming out with some new models.  The boys from Titan’s minis are old, their size is off, and it would be a simple thing to refresh them all.  If you can get ahold of them  very cheap from friends I would say go for it but grabbing new in box kits wouldn’t do you well. There is just too much that can get easily swapped with really 2-3 kits (the regular Marine box gets you 4 units right now and the Terminator box gets you 2 units).

Hopefully this helps you in deciding what you want to get next after opening up your Armageddon box and looking to spend a bit more Hobby money.  What are you excited to grab next and build up?  What Marine army are you excited for?
