Pathfinder Quest, the big, cooperative adventure board game set in Golarion, is here at last. Get ready for an epic adventure.
You might recall last year’s big BackerKit campaign for Pathfinder Quest. This is Paizo’s own take on the cooperative adventure board game genre. If you’ve ever played a game like HeroQuest or Gloomhaven, you know the drill. These kinds of games straddle the line between board game and RPG, and they provide you with a complete experience to explore.
In the case of Pathfinder Quest, you’ll take on the doom that has settled upon the people of Darkmoon Vale. Build your party, consult the adventure book, and head out on a series of interlocking quests that will take you to surprising places. Exactly what you’d hope for from a big adventure-y board game.
Pathfinder Quest – Now In Standard Or Deluxe Edition
This game is going to appeal to the kinds of folks that want to get together with their friends and have a quest experience. It’s not just playing through an RPG campaign; it’s all the extra stuff that comes with a board game. Choices that have sprawling consequences as a result, but they’re all baked in. So it feels like your choices and your actions have their own kind of weight in this pre-made world.
The story starts out simply enough. The undead are rising up out of their mountain dungeons. And something is not right. The people of Falcon’s Hollow are in need of heroes, and that’s where you and your friends come in.
You create your own Pathfinder adventurer, adapted for the board game format, and head out. Each session is a single adventure. Each adventure ties together into an unfolding campaign that will see you deciding the fate of the people of Darkmon Vale. If you’re lucky.
“For many years, the farmers, loggers, and woodworkers of Falcon’s Hollow have lived a simple, prosperous life, despite being in the shadow of Droskar’s Crag, a massive volcano that looms on the other side of Darkmoon Vale. The dungeons carved into that mountain were once a den for monsters that menaced the region, but they’ve been quiet for over 10 years. Now, something stirs in the depths once more, causing the restless dead to pour forth and the mountain to belch smoke and ash, threatening every living person and creature in the Vale! Fortunately, your band of daring adventurers stands ready to face this growing darkness, wielding deadly weapons and utilizing powerful spells to protect the people of Falcon’s Hollow from a terrifying fate. Do you and your fellow adventurers have what it takes to turn the tide and get to the bottom of this mystery?”
What I like about these kinds of games is they do the work of GMing the campaign for you. It’s a board game, too, and that means you and your friends get to just play together. There’s something satisfying about sinking into it, and “letting the book take over” as it were.
All the setups are pre-done. All the choices have their own anticipated consequences, and sometimes you don’t even get to know the full ramifications of your actions for a while. But you don’t even have to mess with finding monster stats or miniatures – all that’s in the box. Well, the miniatures are in the deluxe box, it’s pawns otherwise. But even so, it’s kind of a fun experiment, to see what kind of ending you get. I dunno how replayable that makes it, but I know people are still playing Gloomhaven again and again. So if you’re looking for a big quest in a box, Paizo has you covered with Pathfinder Quest, available now.
See you at Falcon’s Hollow!
