Goatboy here with my top 3 questions about the new Warhammer 40K codexes we got coming our way.
There is a lot to look at with these new 11th Edition Codexes. I know the first of the new Edition books can be really hit or miss but I have high hopes this 40K update has a much longer “plan” then some of the previous editions. Let’s talk about the three bigquestions I have with these new books.
Question 1 – How Many Old Units Will Get Cut?
It is such a wild time to think about an army and how many units they will “Legend”. It is a huge factor in deciding on whether you would want to update or purchase things in hopes they get better when a book comes out. Or are those old units going to go away and any time spent on them while we wait on the new book isn’t going to be worth it. You know the first few books are going to be chock full of new models so do we just wait and see? Do we just look at how old something is right now and just wistfully remember the good ole days when the new book comes out and our robust army of choices is now a much tighter and trimmer set of choices? I’m really looking at the upcoming Codex Space Marines for this question. I’m sure a lot of Classic Marine units have bullseyes on them, and the clock is ticking.
Question 2 – How Much Are Rules Changing?
I hope we see massive changes on the new books. I don’t like it when a new codex releases and it’s just a few tweaks and extra rules. I remember when the old CSM book from a few editions ago got a refresh where they just added a few new units and left the core of the book the same. Thankfully these last two editions seemed to embrace some changes and updates to the books so I expect a lot of shifting in how the army works. I would bet money on Oath of Moment having a big change/removal in the new Space Marine book as it either was too good or just not as useful as you would like. It is the same with the Ork codex that would be incoming as we know the WAAAGH! Works pretty well but what about the rest of the book? Are we going to see a ton of Detachments leaving or are the old digital ones staying and still working? I sorta feel like they should be a complete refresh but I am currently not playing Marines or Orks so I could just be a hater on those players that are diehard blue dudes or green meanies.
Question 3 – Will Early Codexes Rules Set a Pattern for Later Ones?
We know if both of these armies don’t have a pile of rerolls then there is hope they will go away for other codexes. I also wonder if we will see a lot less “stat” changes in the upcoming books with less +1 to hit or other bonuses. I think moving things back to a lot less chance for success might tone down some of the brutality the game is going to represent now. I also wonder if will see more codification of certain types of rules with everything working the same. It is frustrating the some Stratagems with the same sort of effect are working in different phases of the game. If all the Advance/Charge/Movement options happened at the same time it would be easier for a new player to understand things like “Uppy/Downy at end of turn” or Advance/Charge choice in the charge phase.
What questions do you have about the upcoming rules? Are we in for a true kind of refresh and reset when the new books come out and showcase the future we are in for? Are we hoping our Codex comes out towards the end so it can hopefully stay strong for a lot longer in the current edition?
