It’s a big box weekend for Warhamner 40K, along with the return of one of the Imperium’s most reluctant heroes, Ciaphas Cain.

Next week is a big box barrage, with five different Battleforce boxes out. Well, technically one is a “battle group” for the Horus Heresy, but the fact remains, it’s five big boxes, plus armored vehicle support, out for preorder next week. But, more exciting than that, the return of a true legend and hero of the Imperium, despite all efforts to the contrary, Ciaphas Cain. All this, next week!

Battleforce Boxes And Ciaphas Cain

First things first, the big battleforce boxes. It all kicks off with a huge Tyranid Swarm consisting of a Hive Tyrant, a Lictor, 3 Tyranid Warriors, 3 Von Ryan’s Leapers, 10 Hormagaunts, 10 Termagants, and 2 Ripper Swarms. Enough to consume a substantial qauntity of biomass on any planet.

The Chaos Space Marines are out in force with a new Warband boxed set. Daemons. Machines. Daemonic machines, this box has it all, specifically: 10 Legionaries, 20 Chaos Cultists, a Venomcrawler, 2 Obliterators, and a Lord Discordant on Helstalker.

The enemies of the Imperium might seem numberless. And the awakening Necron Hosts across various Tomb Worlds don’t do anything to help. In this box, you’ll find a Catacomb Command Barge alongside 20 Necron Warriors, 5 Flayed Ones, 3 Ophydian Destroyers and accompanying Plasmacyte, a Canoptek Doomstalker, and 6 Scarab Swarms for good measure.

And standing against the Imperium’s many enemies? None other than the brave, often short-lived soldiers of the Astra Militarum. In the new Astra Militarum Platoon box, you’ll get a Commissar and Cadian Command Squad, 10 Cadian Shock Troops, all supported by a Basilisk, Field Ordnance Battery, and a Rogal Dorn tank.

Of course, the Militarum being what it is, they also get some new armored vehicle reinforcements this week. The Centaur RSV can carry your troops to the frontlines even faster and possibly safer.

Meanwhile the Hippogriff AFV combines speed amd heavy firepower. Sure it comes at the cost of some armor, but if your target’s been obliterated by a vigilator cannon, chiron gatling cannon, melta cannon, or heavy lascannon, they probably can’t shoot back.

And if all that wasn’t enough, don’t forget Ciaphas Cain, who is living proof that one man’s “desperate attempt at self-preservation” is another’s “selflessly rooting out even deadlier forces waiting in ambush”. And through it all, the hapless but still meltagun-toting Jurgen following faithfully at his side.

Even The Horus Heresy Gets Boxes

Even the Horus Heresy is getting in on the boxed set action. In the Maximus Battle Group, MkIV ‘Maximus’ power armor is the order of the day. It’s shiny and new on 20 Tactical Marines , 10 MkIV Assault Marines with chainswords or power lances, a Sicaran Battle Tank, and Contemptor Dreadnought.

Round it all out with a Whirlwind Missile Tank, complete with HE or Pyrax missiles for long range bombardment, and you’ve got a load out that will maximize your Maximus.

Of course, if you want to take your new toys into tight spaces, you might want to grab the Journal Tactica: Zone Mortalis. With rules for 1,500-point battles set in confined spaces, complete with new missions and new units it will help you find new wrinkles in the Horus Heresy.
