Four new core army boxes are on the way for all of your New Edition, New Army needs.

The new edition of 40k is just days away, and that means so many of us are getting that New Army Itch. For myself, that’s manifesting as the desire to start a Blood Angels force with the Armageddon box set. But what to do if you’re not excited about Space Marines or Orks? (Really, you don’t like Space Marines AND Orks? C’mon.) Well, Games Workshop is here to help with four new Battleforce boxes releasing at some unspecified but presumably not-too-distant date.

Astra Militarum Platoon

This looks to be the core of a solid all Astra Militarum army. Cadian-themed models look great in any number of paint schemes and this box offers a great mix of core infantry, armor, and artillery. Led by a Cadian Command Squad under the watcful eye of a Commissar, a unit of 10 Cadian Shock Troops provide feet-on-the ground to take objectives. Meanwhile your Field Ordnance batteries and Basilisk provide some heavy support. Finally, an imposing Rogal Dorn battle tank makes an impressive and powerful centerpiece for this combined-arms force.

Tyranid Swarm

I’ve got to admit, this one has my attention. I have a little Tyranid force from last edition’s Leviathan box set and this would be a great way to build out that force. Another balanced, combined-arms style set, army has three major wings. A lictor and three Von Ryan’s Leapers provide fast moving infiltrators to take the fore, backed up by a hormagaunts and termagants to take and hold objectives. All of these lesser creatures are led by a terrifying Hive Tyrant (or Swarmlord/Hive Tyrant with Wings) accompanied by a unit of Tyranid Warriors.

Chaos Space Marine Warband

Who amongst us has not wanted to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade? Well, now you can with this one-click-purchase of heretical aspirants. This set is a great showcase of the recent upgrades and resculpts that Chaos players have received. A terrifying Lord Discordant leads his warband of 10 legionaries, a pair of Obliterators, and a nightmarish Venom Crawler. He was also kind enough to invite along 20 Chaos Cultists so they can take their first steps on the Path to Glory and definitely not as disposable cannon fodder.

Necron Host

The questionably immortal Necrons recieve their own reinforcements with this final box set. Another well-rounded force, 20 Necron Warriors and six Scarab Swarms make up the heart of the host. They’re supported by three Ophydion Destroyers and five Flayed Ones, offering some speed and maneuverability to your implacable advance. A Canoptek Doomstalker looms above the rest of the force, all under the alien will of a Catacomb Command Barge.

Prices have not yet been released but it appears they will all offer some savings against buying their component units as individual kits. Pre-order is coming soon, so stay tuned for specifics.

That Tyranid Swarm is super tempting to me Which is your favorite?
