The forces of the Ruinous Powers breach reality with their detachments and updates for 11th edition 40k.

The Faction Pack rollout continues as promised with the arrival of today’s Chaos downloads. We’ve already seen the 11th edition Faction Packs for Space Marines and Xenos armies earlier this week. This is all pretty familiar ground at this point, but there’s still plenty to consider.

Detachments and Force Dispositions for 7 Armies

All seven of the Chaos-themed armies are supported in today’s set of downloads. Players of the following list can start preparing in earnest for the arrival of Armageddon and the new edition next week.

  • Chaos Space Marines
  • World Eaters
  • Emperor’s Children
  • Death Guard
  • Thousand Sons
  • Chaos Knights
  • Chaos Daemons

Once again, the reveals start with a list of all detachments for each army alongside their new associated Force Dispositions and Detachment Points. Interestingly, relatively few of the older Chaos detachments cost 3 DP. These are largely relegated to the most thematically-driven or character-associated detachments. Detachments like Creations of Bile and Huron’s Marauders, for example, are both 3 DP, presumably because the devs want those to closely represent the picked warbands of infamous characters. The majority of old detachments now cost 2 DP letting you mix and match them readily with the slew of new 1 DP costed detachments releasing with the new edition.

This is all accompanied by the new Force Disposition designations for each detachment. Perhaps unsurprisingly for Chaos players, these seem to lean towards aggressive dispositions. However, there are still plenty of detachments offering Reconaissance and Disruption as options to choose from when building your armies. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this new system plays out when we start getting it onto the table.

Updated Rules and a Sneaky Preview

Once again, these update rules documents are here to establish a baseline for the new edition. Accordingly, none of the changes from 10th edition rules are highlighted or otherwise tracked. Is’s going to be really important for existing players to carefully read their army rules. Some changes are likely to be subtle and easy to miss, especially for armies we’ve played the most.

On top of all of this, the studio staff have clarifed a question about a new keyword. Earlier this week numerous people spotted the new FRAME keyword that now appears on some datasheets. After being barraged with questions about it, Games Workshop kindly revealed its meaning.

In short, it’s a new keyword for the various and sundry 40k vehicles with odd configurations and no bases. This is a relatively small category that includes some of the biggest models in the game like the Brass Scoropion and the larger knights and titans. This is a simple but solid quality of life update and should make playing with these oversize models much more straightforward.

Well, there’s lots to dig into here and I’m going to go mull over just what a Red Corsairs army might look like for me. Just one Faction Packs remains to be revealed and we’ll be back tomorrow to discuss the rest of the Imperial forces.

They really need to add just one more Chaos faction to get that magic number 8, don’t they? Maybe we’ll finally see Dark Mechanicum this edition!
