With inspiration from Revachol’s finest disco-powered detective, Vampire: The Masquerade has a new video game, Eternal Whispers, in the works.

It is impossible to capture the sheer dizzying height of the variety of games announced recently. Sure. There’s the big stuff that everyone is hopeful/hyped for, like the rebooted Ocarina of Time, and the surprisingly soon-to-be-released X-COM-inspired Star Wars: Zero Company. But lest it slip into the shadows unnoticed, Vampire: The Masquerade has a new video game in the works as well. And this one says it takes inspiration from Disco Elysium, one of the all-time greatest video game RPGs.

I’m so intrigued to see what exactly they mean. Because Disco Elysium’s blend of failure and characters who are at their best when they’re behaving at their worst felt like lightning in a bottle. But if you’re telling me I can play a Toreador who is an absolute disaster, then I’m there. Let’s check it out.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers

The new game, Vampire: the Masquerade – Eternal Whispers comes from tabletop studio Flyos, whom you might recognize as the creator of the sprawling board game, Vampire: the Masquerade – Chapters. While Chapters was not without its missteps during development, Flyos now has its sights set on a video game taking cues from Disco Elysium.

Announced during the PC Gaming Show stream, Eternal Whispers will tell a new story in the World of Darkness. Where does Disco Elysium come in? Well just watch the trailer, and also look at the screen shots from the game (still in development) and you can see it right away.

Eternal Whispers doesn’t hide its influence, but that’s fine. Disco Elysium is one of the best RPGs out there. But it’s not just the aesthetics, becaus EW’s main character also has fragmented memories and needs to solve a mystery.

You are Gabe, a vampire awakened from decades of torpor with fractured memories and a past buried deeper than the dead. Guided by Sam, a reluctant Thin-Blood, what begins as a hunt for a rogue ghoul spirals into a dangerous conspiracy tied to the Temple of Eternal Whispers, a vast underground cathedral built in devotion to a forbidden faith.

As you investigate the mystery surrounding your forgotten past, you uncover disturbing truths about the Sabbat. Your release sets forgotten forces into motion, while something ancient still lies buried beneath the city, a secret capable of reshaping Montreal’s undead society forever. The deeper you delve into your connection with the Temple of Eternal Whispers, the more you unravel the darkness buried within yourself. Will you embrace the monstrous legacy of your Sabbat origins, or fight to preserve the last remnants of your humanity?

I mean, Disco Elysium is great. Flyos certainly has some big shoes to fill. But I like this approach to Vampire. It’s a fresh take, you are emerging from torpor and swept up in a mystery with a Thin-blood. What more do you want? Oh and it takes place in Montreal.

So far, it’s still very early. And Vampire has a rocky history with video games, at best. But I think this is one worth getting cautiously optimistic about, because even if it’s just a fun, kind of bumbling vampire story; that’s something we haven’t really seen yet. I like the angle. A lot. At any rate, we’ll keep a close eye out for this one.

Look for Vampire: the Masquerade Eternal Whispers sometime in the future!
