Gather your party because it seems we may be in for remakes of the original Baldur’s Gate games, according to a new report.

Hot off the internet, new reporting from PC Gamer says that WotC is developing a remake of the original Baldur’s Gate games. And, more specifically, Baldur’s Gate 2, which is my favorite. Not only that, but one of the original co-leads, Kevin Martens, is returning to head them up. Gather your party and let’s venture forth.

Baldur’s Gate 2 Remake Reportedly In Development

It seems extremely likely, given the popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3, and the almost inevitability of a Baldur’s Gate 4 (with enormous shoes to fill). But before then, the original games will be getting the remake treatment, according to an unnamed source speaking with PC Gamer.

This source, familiar with the project, says that development on the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake is already underway, headed up by Kevin Martens. Martens was one of the original co-leads on the game, tough you might know him from his work on Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, or Diablo 3.

According to PC Gamer, Martens was already working for WotC at Archetype Entertainment, developers of the upcoming sci-fi rpg, Exodus.

“Martens was already working with WotC again. He’s been contributing to Exodus—the Mass Effect-like RPG—at Archetype Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of WotC. According to a source familiar with the project, Martens is already working on the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake.”

This isn’t the first time anyone has revisited the original Baldur’s Gate games. You can find the Enhanced Editions of all the originals developed by Beamdog. These are remasters with modernized features to make the quality of play a little better. But the new remakes, presumably, bring big changes with them.

A more dramatic example of a beloved rpg, remade, can be seen in the form of the recent Final Fantasy VII remakes. Which are entirely different games, tackling the same story with new mechanics. It’s possible we might see a BG3 style update to the original games, but with WotC not commenting on “speculation and rumors,” it will likely be a while before anything more concrete comes out. So keep an eye out.
