May has arrived, the horses have run for the roses, and fresh Hollywood news has sprung up. Time for a round-up!
Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu is flashing Solo-like box office warning signs, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The early box office tracking for the film is coming in at $80 million for its four-day Memorial Day weekend premiere, well under the $103 million opening for Solo: A Star Wars Story in the same weekend in 2018 (see “’Solo’ Fizzles“). This is before Disney’s final marketing push leading up to the premiere, so it’s more than likely the movie will do a lot better than the current $80 million tracking number, but it’s not a great sign on a film that carried a heavy budget and the weight of one of Disney’s flagship properties.
Disney is making a new live-action Casper the Friendly Ghost series, according to Deadline. Disney recently won the rights to Casper in a bidding war. The project will be led by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, the producers of the recently cancelled Goosebumps series (see “‘Goosebumps’ Canceled“), and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
Sony Pictures Entertainment released a teaser trailer for Resident Evil (see below). The new movie, based on the popular video game series (see “Resident Evil“), was directed by Zach Cregger and stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. It will hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
HBO Max released a new trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 (see below). The season begins streaming on June 21, 2026. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season (see “‘Game of Thrones’ Series News“).
Sony Pictures Entertainment is developing a Django/Zorro movie, according to Variety. This western is based on the comic series by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner (see “‘Django / Zorro’ TP“), and will be penned by Brian Helgeland, who won an Academy Award for L.A. Confidential.
Prime Video has cancelled Gen V, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This The Boys spinoff series (see “‘The Boys: Gen V’“) wrapped up its now final (second) season in October 2025.Source: ICV2
