The Jack Kirby Museum has received a donation of over 50 pages of Jack Kirby art, the organization announced. The donation from the Howell/Kalish collection by comic writer, publisher, and Kirby scholar Richard Howell, is the largest donation of art the museum has ever received.
Pieces in the donation include 1960s Marvel work, including Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thor; mid-70s work for DC; and work from his return to Marvel, including Devil Dinosaur and 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with an unpublished cover for What If? #10 featuring Jane Foster as Thor, two original stories from his 1950s Boys Ranch series, and animation concept art for Hanna-Barbera from the early 1980s.
Howell explained his motivation for the donation. “Jack Kirby has been an inspiration in my own comic art and storytelling for as long as I remember,” he said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I want these pages to be seen and studied and giving them to the Jack Kirby Museum was the right way to do that.”
This is a big step up for the Kirby Museum, which to this point has been primarily focused on building a digital archive of Kirby work. A selection of the work in the donation will be exhibited in 2027, the Museum said in the announcement. A second donation from a trust established by an anonymous longtime collector was also announced.
