The dog days of summer continue to bring the heat, but so does Hollywood news. Time for a round-up!
NBC Universal locked in the two showrunners of the upcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl series for Peacock, according to Variety. Eric Heisserer, who had also been working to get a Pacific Rim series off the ground for Prime Video (see “‘Pacific Rim’ Series News“), has joined the production as co-showrunner. The other, previously announced co-showrunner and writer is Chris Yost (see “‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’“).
HBO Max has placed an order for DC Studio series The People v. Gorilla Grodd. This series had been previously teased under a few different working titles, as DC Crime (see “‘DC Crime’“) and as the Jimmy Olsen series. The series will be a mockumentary crime series starring Skyler Gisando as Jimmy Olsen and Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd as well as Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard), Mikaela Hoover (Cat Grant) and Wendell Pierce (Perry White).
In other DC Studios news, the first episode of Lanterns recorded 9.3 million views in its first three days of availability on HBO and HBO Max, according to Variety. This is the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show; the show premiered on August 16, 2026 (see “‘Lanterns’“).
Marvel Studios revealed the release date for the upcoming Ghost Rider movie, starring Ryan Gosling (see “Ryan Gosling Is ‘Ghost Rider’“). It will hit theaters on July 28, 2028.
HBO Max renewed IT: Welcome to Derry, according to Variety. The first season of this prequel series to the IT movies began streaming on October 26, 2025 (see “‘It: Welcome to Derry’“).
Amazon MGM is developing a movie for Squishmallows, according to Variety. Squishmallows are huggable plush toys by Jazwares that were a hot toy item circa 2023 through 2024 (see “PRO: Channel Check“). The movie is being developed as a tentpole family film with Beau Flynn and Shelby Thomas producing the project.Source: ICV2
