Prepare for trouble! Pokémon Pocket is releasing a Team Rocket set next week, on August 27, 2026, and it just dropped a trailer showing off loads of the new cards. No doubt DeNA is hoping this set, Rocket’s Ambition, will be just as much of a draw as the TCG’s Destined Rivals.
Judging by the tone of the trailer, Rocket’s Ambition portrays the Rocket Gang as more mischievous than downright dastardly, and most of the cards seem more silly and fun than powerful and competitive.
I’m talking about cards like Team Rocket’s Thieving Machine, which nicks a random item from your opponent’s Discard pile. Team Rocket’s Master Plan confuses your opponent’s Pokémon, but has a 50/50 chance to also confuse your own.
Team Rocket’s Boss (not sure why they didn’t just write Giovanni) lets you force your opponent to play their basic Pokémon, which might be useful for Team Rocket’s Zapdos, which can hit the bench. More importantly, it could be great in a Suicune ex deck.
Team Rocket’s Articuno damages your own bench, meanwhile which seems rough right now, but will be great if Pocket ever gets a Munkidori equivalent.
Team Rocket’s Moltres is a little different, however. It’s looking a lot like Charizard. While its ability is less consistent, it is a basic Pokémon, so you don’t need to devote nearly as many slots in your deck to supporting it.
All in all, the cards shown off so far seem fairly weak – nothing stands out as immediately exciting. However, we know better than to judge a release off just a handful of cards, and even if it’s not a total powerhouse set, we can already see there’s some great art.
That trailer has me pretty pumped in fact. It might be time for me to re-download Pocket.
