The first season of the One Piece anime ran from 1999 to 2001, and it’s still available on Crunchyroll, but something new is in the works: The One Piece, launching on Netflix in February 2027 (see “‘The One Piece’“), will retell the story from the beginning, with the first seven episodes covering the first 50 chapters of the manga.  Another Netflix series that premiered in August, The Ribbon Hero, is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight, which was first adapted into anime in 1967.

These are just the most prominent examples of a new trend: Remaking older anime series, which in many cases have been around long enough that the early episodes look dated.  Two more reboots are set to premiere in October 2026, a 20th anniversary remake of Sgt. Frog and a 30th anniversary Magic Knight Rayearth anime.  No American licensor has been announced for either series yet.

Some older series are also getting anime treatments for the first time.  Psyren is a Shonen Jump series that VIZ Media published from 2011 to 2014, so it has also been around for a while, but this is the first anime based on the manga; it will also launch in October.

Another anime trend is using manhwa as source material; that helped boost Solo Leveling into bestseller-dom, and in October 2026 Overgeared, based on a Korean webtoon that ran on the Tapas platform before being published in print by Ize Press, will launch on Crunchyroll.

One newer Japanese series, Firefly Wedding, will also launch as an anime on Crunchyroll in October.  The manga, published by VIZ Media in their Shojo Beat line, launched here in January 2025; it’s a romance set in the Meiji era about a noblewoman with a fatal heart condition who escapes an assassination attempt by proposing to the would-be assassin.

The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy After All (a.k.a. the green yuri) is getting an anime that will launch in January 2027 on Crunchyroll.  The first volume already sells well enough to occasionally make the BookScan top 20 (see “July 2026 Circana BookScan“), and it’s likely that the anime will help it do even better.

In addition, new seasons of The Apothecary Diaries, Tokyo Revengers, and Black Clover are slated to launch in October.
