Warhammer’s biggest model range is about to get even more massive

Just about every Warhammer: Age of Sigmar army has one huge centerpiece model kit, a whopping great behemoth that stretches the definition of the word “miniature”. The exception is the Sons of Behemat, an army of models the size of garden gnomes – and this force of colossal bruisers is about to get even bigger thanks to an avalanche of new Gargant models that Games Workshop revealed on Monday.

At the head of the new giant troop is Ma Maegran, the second named character for the army, its first spellcaster, and the first female Gargant model. GW doesn’t give any details on how she functions in the army list, but it does give a narrative gloss for her magic powers: “it is said that she can bestow the blessing of almighty bigness upon one who might please her, but that she can also strip it away from those who earn her ire”. So a buff spell and a debuff spell, then.

It’s really difficult to tell from the photographs and video just how large she will be. As the Warhammer Community article specifies her “reputation as a seer and a witch leads even the great Mega-Gargants to show her respect and deference”, this suggests she isn’t quite as big as they are, but as a special character she’s got a good chance of being taller than the comparatively titchy Mancrusher Gargants.

That’s probably for the best for anyone who actually hopes to buy the new model, since she comes accompanied by a pair of Ancient Ghyrochs, “ornery megafauna that pulse with the life magic of Ghyran”. Maegran seems to be on the same size base as her two turbo-sheep, so I think we’ll be lucky if she “only” costs as much as a Mega-Gargant, around $215 (£135).

Following in Maegran’s sedan-sized footprints is a second kit which can build two new units of smaller Gargants. Yep, that’s right, units – the set will contain three models, with multiple build options.

One option is to turn the unit into Boss Stompers, equipped with clubs and the strategic brilliance to specifically hunt out enemy leaders instead of just walking forwards and lamping everything nearby. Or, if you want to get some ranged support, you can build them as Rock-hurlers, who do exactly what their name suggests.

These Gargants apparently “skirmish around the feet of their taller kin”, and photographs suggest that they’re about the same size as the classic Mancrusher Gargants. The models are so similar in design to the existing model that I wonder if they’re a functional replacement for the existing, updated with AoS aesthetics.

We’ll find out when we see the updated army rules in the new Sons of Behemat battletome, which GW says will be available for pre-order “soon”.

How monsters as big as these managed to stay hidden is a mystery to me, but I did not see these kits coming. Which army would you like to see get a surprise update next? Come and chat about it in the Wargamer Discord community!
