I’ve already said a lot about the Pikachu Pokémon cards coming out in The Pokémon TCG’s 30th Anniversary, but you’re going to have to bear with me, because the monster-making company has just shown off two SIRs for the little yellow guy, and they are well worth gushing over.
These Special Illustration Rare cards for the day and night Pikachu exs feature incredibly busy night and daytime scenes, and each one is packed with Pokémon. In fact, it looks like there are 30 in total on each card.
Let’s see, on the daytime card we have:
- Pikachu
- Slowpoke
- Maushold
- Gimmighoul
- Morpeko (I think)
- Fuecoco
- Meowth
- Nidorina
- Exeggcute
- Igglybuff
- Sylveon
- Espeon
- Volbeat
- Alolan Exeggutor
- Hakamo-o
- Vivillon (Pokéball pattern – shouldn’t it be Sun?)
- Salamence
- Drifloon
- Cosmog
- Moltres
- Articuno
- Mew
- Lapras
- Ditto
On the nighttime card we have:
- Nidoran (female)
- Umbreon
- Eevee
- Pikachu
- Hisuian Zorua
- Cosmoem
- Scraggy
- Galarian Meowth
- Alolan Meowth
- Hisuian Zoroark
- Toxtricity
- Gengar
- Dusk Form Lycanroc
- Lucario
- Greninja
- Seismitoad
- Snorlax
- Kommo-o
- Jangmo-o
- Ferrothorn
- Gholdengo
- Illumise
- Chandelure
- Jirachi
- Mewtwo
- Zapdos
So in fact it’s 24 and 26. Okay, now I’m just confused. Perhaps 30 was just too many illustrations? Perhaps I’ve miscounted, or maybe these cards were originally intended to be part of the 25th anniversary?
None of these answers line up. After all, 30th Celebration already managed to fit 30 Nidorinas on a card for the full art promo. I’ve checked and double checked my counting. And this can’t be art from somewhere else because every Pokémon here is also found elsewhere in the 30th Celebration set.
But 30 Pokémon or not, these SIRs display the widest variety of Pokémon we’ve ever seen on single cards, and they are glorious to behold. Take my money and give me one of these cards!
Now also seems like a great time to praise TPC for their Pokémon selection here and in this set as a whole, as it is top notch. They haven’t just stuck with fan-favorites, there’s a good combination of crowdpleasers, legendary Pokémon, regional variants, and even some Pokémon that rarely get featured anywhere, like Illumise or Hakamo-o. Seriously, when was the last time you gave much thought to either of those?
They’ve catered to every taste – with some cute Pokemon, some cool, and some downright strange. And they’ve even managed to cover a good spread with at least two Pokémon from each generation, despite still managing to squeeze in several complete evolution lines. It’s genuinely impressive.
Unfortunately, these cards are one more reason for fans to buy up 30th Celebration in bulk. Please, TPC, tell me you printed this one in abundance!
If I did, in fact, miss a monster, please tell me on the Wargamer Discord. I actually want to be corrected here!
