The Star Wars universe will crossover with the Marvel Comics universe for the first time ever in Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue series by writer Kevin Smith and artist David Marquez, set to launch in January 2027. The crossover will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the franchise, which launched in 1977 with the original Star Wars movie (now titled Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope).
The comic will bring together the best-known versions of the Star Wars and Marvel Comics universes, with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca making their appearance on Earth-616, the main Marvel continuity, along with Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. On the darker side, Doctor Doom and other Marvel villains will head to the Galactic Empire to join forces with Darth Vader.
“Back in the early ’80s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga,” Smith told Entertainment Weekly. “So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand!”
“It’s an idea we’ve wanted to explore since getting the Star Wars license back over a decade ago,” added outgoing Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, “but we knew we’d have to wait with the patience of a Jedi to make it happen. The 50th anniversary of A New Hope has finally given us the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring these two universes together, in this incredible story being told by Kevin Smith and David Marquez. Getting the call with the green light from Lucasfilm was a magical moment; it was as if Han Solo himself had called to tell me, ‘You’re all clear, kid!'”
Marvel, which originally had the Star Wars license, began publishing Star Wars comics again in 2015 after Marvel’s parent company Disney acquired Lucasfilm (see “Marvel Gets ‘Star Wars’“).
