Goatboy here and today’s Hot Mess is all about losing the mission Disposition you loved the most in the new update – we all know it’s Purge the Foe.

Losing your favorite Mission disposition friggin sucks and its made me sad.  I played a tournament this past weekend.  It was my first 11th edition event and I went with Purge the Foe and built out a list designed to play that way with a detachment I liked.  Now the update has changed it and I am a bit miffed.

In Defense of Purge the Foe

I know people think Purge the Foe is the crayon eater’s disposition but it isn’t just about being easy.  It’s about playing the game the way we used to play it.  The idea that our job is to go out punch things and then sometimes hold a shiny objective as other parts of your army punched other things.  This isn’t about the dance of going all over the edges and trying to score with your MSU options.  This isn’t about having a tons of bodies and sitting on terrain pieces for all eternity.  Heck it isn’t even about trying to disrupt the party on the table top with Home Alone traps and hoping the enemy falls in.  No – this is about righteous aggression.

Which of course means it is probably a good thing a bunch of 1 point Detachment shifted from Purge the Foe.  There should be a lot of choice into figuring out how your army is supposed to score.  This shouldn’t just be about picking all the strongest army choices and shoving them into a detachment to hope you can score easier.  This should be about planning your army out, building out your forces, and concocting a plan to get that mission done.

I just wish it wasn’t done to my cool mixed Daemon/Emperor’s Children army.  I don’t want to trap objectives.  Did you lose out on your old army style and have to figure out something new? Do we actually have to make smart detachment choices that are more than just 2 Stratagems and a good Enhancement?  Are we supposed to look at their rules and figure out how to use them?

The Future of Missions?

Right now I can expect the next update to do more than just shift the Dispositions.  I am wondering if will see a tweak to the actual missions to make things harder or create bad match ups. I understand the idea to balance things out and hope if one type of army is winning the mismatch will come out and put it in its place a bit.  This is hoping it goes beyond just an army being better than another and going further with a mission style working out better than another.

Of course this all makes the team side of things even crazier if missions can change before an event.  What if you are practicing for a while with a specific army design and then it shifts and you can’t score the way you used too?  It becomes a pretty big mess as you try to pivot or heck even change your army?  These are the kind of chaotic things that actually excites me as it can cause funky armies to be used and maybe even a more refreshing team environment.

For Now My World Eaters Will Continue Purging

I won’t know till a few months from now when I get out to the Challengers Cup in Utah later this year.  We’ll see if I even get to play Purge the Foe and instead get shoved into something more akin to – please score just 10 points this round Goatboy.  It will be a wild time indeed.

Right now I am just looking at World Eaters again as I can play Purge the Foe in two different options that I already have painted beyond a few weapons swaps.  It is wild to think of what I am changing some things too – especially if you have been playing World Eaters for a while.  It is going to be a crazy time as we will have shifts in the meta pretty hard as we wait on army books to come out, a pile of detachments to get introduced, and most likely more shifts than we would like as competitive players.

What do you think about the changes to Purge the Foe?
