We are that much closer to the release of Steve Jackson Games’ revised 4th Edition of its universal RPG, GURPS. Here’s what we know.
Last year, you might recall, Steve Jackson Games teased a ‘Revised 4th Edition’ collection of its iconic RPG. GURPS, the Generic Universal RolePlaying System, is a venerable RPG and is most recently in its 4th Edition. And at GameHole Con, SJG teased a revised version for 2026, with a focus on “layout and readability.” Well, now, it seems that’s here with the pre-order release of GURPS Basic Set, 4th Edition Revised.
GURPS Basic Set, 4th Edition Revised – Pre-Order Today
If you’re not familiar with GURPS, it’s a universal ruleset that can tackle anything from futuristic cyborg hackers to fantasy worlds full of demons and magic, and also a surprisingly well-researched array of stuff from Earth’s history. Famously, GURPS is the RPG reponsible for the Secret Service raiding Steve Jackson Games, the fallout of which led to the creation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
And the latest edition, 4th Edition Revised, is exactly that, a revision of 4E GURPS, which was originally released back in 2004. Don’t worry, though, this is actually just a revision and not just marketing speak for ‘please don’t jump ship.’
There aren’t any changes to the rules or even the page references. But where possible, rules have been reworded for clarity and to address FAQs of the last two decades. There’s a better layout and with everything in a single volume, it’s easier than ever to find what you need, especially since the PDF version of the book has upgraded accessibility and machine-readable icons.
“GURPS lets you be anyone you want in any world you can imagine. Elves in fantasy, Musketeers in historical France, action heroes or superheroes in today’s world, futuristic space explorers, cartoon characters… GURPS provides tools for all this and more. That’s why it has been the premier universal roleplaying game for four decades!
This 592-page book – with a new cover and two-column layout – contains everything from ‘Characters’ and ‘Campaigns’, lightly edited for internal consistency, errata fixes, sensitivity, and to bring a few bits of information up to date.”
Though it’s not just a collection of old rules that have been updated. You’ll also get a swath of new stuff. There are 16 pages of “all-new game content” plus 27 pages of rules highlights from GURPS books and various Pyramid articles over the last two decades.
This is sure to be indispensable for any GURPS player. If you’ve never tried it, this might also be the perfect way to dip your feet into the 3d6 pool.
And the new book is completely usable with any other GURPS 4E books!
