WotC President John Hight will be stepping down from his position as of September 1st, after just two years in the role.
According to reporting from Gamesindustry.biz, WotC President John Hight will be stepping down from his role as of September 1st, transitioning to an advisory role in the company. This comes after a relatively short tenure, just two years at WotC. And, perhaps more relevant, after a $56 million impairment charge as Hasbro/WotC re-evaluates its investment in gaming.
WotC President To Step Down September 1st
It seems change is in the air for Wizards of the Coast. John Hight, who came to WotC from Blizzard, where he had been general manager for Warcraft for 13 years, saw both Magic and D&D through transitional periods. Not to mention the development of several games, including Exodus and Warlock.
Both of which were called out by name in a statement from Wizards of the Coast to Gamesindustry.biz. It seems that, whatever new direction Hasbro will be steering WotC into, those two games are a big part of the move.
“After two years as President of Wizards of the Coast, John Hight is transitioning from the role, effective September 1. We’re deeply grateful for his leadership and the contributions he’s made to our teams and our games during his tenure. John will continue to support Wizards in an advisory capacity while pursuing other creative and professional opportunities he’s passionate about.
There is no change to the strength of the Wizards business. Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons continue to perform incredibly well, consistent with our most recent earnings release, and our upcoming 2027 video game slate, including Exodus and Warlock remains on track.”
Hight was one of the voices talking excitedly about upcoming game projects, including the now-canceled project with Giant Skull and former Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor director Stig Amussen. As Hasbro figures out its next steps, it begins searching for the next WotC president, looking both internally and externally.
