It seems that D&D and World of Warcraft are on a collision course for a crossover come Gen Con next week, according to an accidental leak.
It looks like a glimpse of the cat has escaped the proverbial bag. According to reporting from EN World, who spotted a now-taken-down Roll 20 blog post, the leak revealed a crossover with the venerable MMO, World of Warcraft, along with promo artwork that WoW players will recognize as coming from World of Warcraft: The War Within, the first expansion of the Worldsoul Saga trilogy. Let’s take a look.
D&D x World of Warcraft
As originally spotted by EN World, along with the announcement in the now-removed blog post, which touted “pre-orders are now live,” this seems to indicate that this may very well be the next big book. You might recall from the D&D Roadmap that the last book of the ‘year’ is yet to be announced.
This is the book that will anchor the ‘Season of Champions’ just as Ravenloft: the Horrors Within was the root of the ‘Season of Horror,’ and the two Arcana Unleashed books are the root of the ‘Season of Magic.’
Couple that with the fact that we know very well that Hasbro’s CEO Chris Cocks is on record saying that players can expect more crossovers for D&D in the not too distant future, and it feels like this is probably it, right here. It wouldn’t be the first time D&D has collided with World of Warcraft, either.
Back in the high days of 3.5, when World of Warcraft was but a fledgling global phenomenon. When they hadn’t even introduced The Burning Crusade or flying mounts, or Pandaren, or pet battles, or mythic raids. Back when all you really had to worry about was an overeager Paladin running through the Rookery in Blackrock Spire, there was a set of WoW sourcebooks for D&D. Also, there was 4th Edition, which is both criticized and praised in equal measure for being more like an MMORPG than D&D.
A 5.5E crossover makes sense. And with a focus on Azeroth as it is in the wake of the Worldsoul Saga, it comes at a weirdly appropriate time to explore and expand some of the corners of the world. If nothing else, it should make for some interesting subclasses. Maybe even a new class if we’re lucky.
