Goatboy here to go over some of things I’m glad we’ve left in the past of Warhammer 40K. Good riddance!
While OldHammer articles are full of nostalgic yearnings, it wasn’t all roses back in the day. I thought why not go through some of the things I don’t miss from the older editions of the Grimdark. These are some of the more annoying things we forget about as we live and breathe in this new digital age of events working together and GW as a whole responding most of the time. I won’t go over some of the older things I talked about before but let’s delve into some of the new things.
Complex Custom Missions You Had to Score Yourself
Look there was a time where the gentle person’s game of 40k was moving your stuff into the center, smashing your models together, and whoever killed the most won the game. There were a ton of events that tried to bring some kind of flavor to their missions that sometimes worked – but most of the time become a chore to keep up with. Of course we now live in an age where our missions are all about tracking scoring through out the game but thankfully we have TWO apps we can use to help us out. Still it was some crazy times to roll into an event, have a judge start out saying how they wanted to do something different, and then trying to figure out how your army can win. I remember a few Adepticons in the early days having some wonky team missions that still sometimes show up to his day.
Carrying a Library For All Your Army Rules
Do you know how nice it is to have an App that houses all your rules? I remember many a time carrying my codex, a supplement book, some Forge World books, and then even an event FAQ printed out (AKA, “the bloat“). It was a wild time and while I do miss some of the customization from those days it is a heck of a lot nicer to get all your rules in one device you can also watch bad YouTube videos on. I do wish GW would make it easier to purchase rules for the device but I tried the new tracking app with the shared rule system and that part of it worked well. It was nice that you could see your opponents list and hope we get more integration with BCP and other aspects of the game.
Deep Strike Scatter Killing Your Own Dudes!
I hated this almost as much as I hated Seize the Initiative. I know I have won a few games where my opponents unit fell off of the edge of the world and “died” with a bad roll. I have also lost many a unit that deep struck in and scattered 12 inches into a poor position. Or just somehow rolling on top of enemy. I watched many pile of drop pods crowd me in and lock me from getting to the midfield. It was a wild time to utilize scatter dice and hope you rolled that hit roll to stick the landing and do what you wanted to do. We can all be happy to know that teleporting into the battlefield has been solved and we no longer have to worry about the whims of fate. We can leave that to the hazardous rolls we get for weapons that always seem to work in the novels.
What rule are you glad is gone? I almost wrote how we have lost the random moving objective missions. Those were always a pain even though it did create some really goofy interactions. Or how about the Relic you could pick up and drive off with?
these fellows saw so many, many Deep Strike mishaps through the years…

Thomas Reidy, aka Goatboy, the ever-evil member of BoLS. I do arts, play 40k, and even paint a lot of stuff. I have been playing Warhammer 40K since the 1990s, and have won multiple national events including Adepticon and GW GTs. I’ve been writing for BoLS for 15 years. Look at my Instagram to see what I am working on – or working on for someone. I am always doing something hobby related.
