Wizards of the Coast previewed their Star Trek booster set, for Magic: The Gathering, which will hit stores on November 20, 2026.
One of the biggest questions revolving around Magic: The Gathering 2026 releases (see “2026 Schedule“) was about what exactly would be in the Q4 Star Trek set? The only real clues to the contents of this set were that it involved Star Trek captains as Legendary Creatures and perhaps that Spacecraft cards from Edge of Eternities (see “‘Magic: The Gathering – Edge of Eternities’“) would make a return in this set. Today, WotC announced that there would be so much more to this set then originally anticipated.
The biggest announcement for this set was that it would include autographed cards as chase cards in Collector Boosters. The two autographed cards revealed were Captain James T. Kirk (with William Shatner’s autograph) and Captain Kathryn Janeway (with Kate Mulgrew’s autograph). The graphic in the announcement indicated that there were five other autographed chase cards in the set.
Including autographed cards is, of course, a major move for WotC with Magic: The Gathering products. Adding autographed cards to sets completes their slow, but steady, transition towards more of a non-sports trading card chase card model. They started this transition by offering parallels (showcase cards) starting in Throne of Eldraine (see “‘Throne of Eldraine’ Product Line“), then inched further toward the model by inserting serialized cards in sets beginning with The Brothers’ War (see “The Brothers’ War“). WotC then offered up hot-stamped autograph cards with TMNT (see “Cowabunga, Dudes!“); the Star Trek autographed cards essentially completes their move toward the non-sports trading card chase card model that Fanatics, Panini, Upper Deck and others have been using for years now.
Beyond the autographed cards, the set features famous spacecraft as cards and characters from Star Trek. Saga cards return to showcase plot lines from various Star Trek episodes, and flavor mechanics for this set will include the return of phasing and explore, and a new assimilate mechanic for the Borg cards (ETB effect: Adds a +1/+1 counter to a creature and makes them a Borg artifact creature). Significant reprints for the set include Sheoldred, the Apocalypse as “Khan, Engineered Evil” and another printing of the Shock Lands. There were a few notable mythic rares revealed for the set: Crystalline Entity (which is clearly a Tron card), Captain James T. Kirk (good for Mono Red decks), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (creates obnoxious combos with various Angel/Soul Sisters decks).
The set has all kinds of different card treatments as well. There are Classic Enterprise and LCARS frame treatments as well as Surge Foil cards in the set, and there will be five new Welcome Decks available.
