Pathfinders are getting ready to descend into a whole Bastion of Blasphemies as Paizo gears up for the next big adventure path. And you can start prepping for it today with the new, free Player’s Guide, which is available for download. In it, you’ll find all sorts of guidance on creating a character whose background, archetype, and other qualities make them feel like a central part of the unfolding story.

Bastion of Blasphemies Player’s Guide

The thing I like about these Player’s Guides is that they are helpful, but also spoiler-free guides to preparing for the adventure. So if you want to go in, not completely unaware, but with the blank canvas of possibility laid before you (and who doesn’t), it’s a good way to make sure you make a character that fits into the story. Instead of playing, say, a pirate in a landlocked campaign.

Not impossible, sure, but also it doesn’t lend itself to the story. So what does lend itself to the story? Well, as it turns out, the kind of stuff you’d expect in a spooky campaign. Champions, Clerics, Rogues, Investigators; especially those of Human or Horror-themed ancestries.

You also get some spoiler-free lore dumps that include pertinent information that your characters might know at the start of things. That way you don’t have to ask the GM what your character knows. You can just read through it.

“For hundreds of years, a ruined, massive, and haunted castle has sat on an island in Lake Laroba in Ustalav, feared and shunned by those who live nearby. It was this castle, formerly known as Castle Arudora, that a family of adventurers called home—that is, until a dreadful curse struck the family. The nearby townsfolk at the time were terrified whatever evil struck the castle, so they burned down the causeway bridge that connected the island to the mainland, hoping to seal it away. Once per century over the past 500 years, a ghostly bridge has formed over the ruins and a black coach drawn by terrible horses emerged.from the gates. It’s said the coach seeks out those remaining members of the Arudora family and those who enter are never heard from again. Any who refuse the ride inevitably fall victim to tragedy not long after.”

They also give you a handful of custom backgrounds that will suit you to the campaign, like the Art Collector or Curse-Marked Backgrounds. There are six all in all. You can read up on them, and the lore of the Bastardhall for yourself by reading the Bastion of Blasphemies Player’s Guide at the link below!
