Goatboy here; happy 11th edition! The new 40K Edition is still in the cradle, and already some rules are out of balance. Don’t be surprised to see these get FAQed.
I will be playing my first official event in a few weeks and I am waffling on whether to take World Eaters or try and quickly paint up Fulgrim for an Emperor’s Children build. Will see if I actually find time to build the snake prince while at the beach. Lucky for me the rules issues I expect to get changed are not part of either of the armies I want to play. Let’s sit back and look over 3 things I think will get an update.
Imperial Knights – Gate Warden Lance – 2DP
This is a gnarly one due to the fact it sits at 2 Detachment Points. The rules for this Imperial Knights detachment has you pick two objectives and draw an imaginary line from each part of the objective to the other one. That line is now your defense line and touching it gives your Knights Sustained Hits 1 and ignoring all hit roll modifiers. That is a pile of good rules and in the old edition the line was pretty small between the two no man’s land objectives. In 11th edition the objective is not a piece of terrain which creates a rather big line to rest your Knight on. The rule itself is powerful but not insane. I think the real issue with the Gate Warden Lance is just the detachment being 2 points which allows you to take something else to ether get a better tournament disposition or find something to give your giant Knight Dominus some extra spicy rules. I think this one is going to see a change or at the very least go up to 3 Detachment points.
Necrons – Reanimation Protocols
This is another wild one because the way Reanimation Protocols work you can have your character Precision’d out and then regrown with the destroyed Necron Leader due to the regrow rules allowing you to bring back a destroyed model. The old ways had you use a Stratagem to bring the undead robot back but now you can easily just bring the character back to the fold. I expect this to get a tweak where the characters themselves can’t come back to life and leave the whole ability to regrow the unit off of the living character. It is going to be very tricky for GW to correctly point cost a Necron leader that just doesn’t go away during a game. The same Cryptek in a Warrior blob isn’t the same in a Wraith block. It just means you have to kill them all or hope you Battleshock them for a while.
Thousand Sons – Psychic Weapons
Thousand Sons appear to be point costed very aggressively and designed to ignore so many rules built in the game to balance armies. Being able to ignore this new cover system is a huge problem for a lot of armies. The sons of Magnus also have piles of Lethal Hits, under-costed Daemon engines, and detachments that feel very powerful. It feels to me that this army will see some point adjustments in the future as they just have too much available to them right off the bat. Did you see how cheap a TS Forgefiend is? What about all the chaff they still have available to them?
Let’s Just Sit and Wait
Lucky for us GW is listening, and paying attention closely. I expect to see things shift and change as the year continues on. We’ll see how the Ork codex looks and get an idea of what the Design Studio wants 11th Edition to be. The only real worry I have with Orks is having too many Lethal Hits can be an issue as it effectively ignores some units “rules” such as just being tougher or having other negative methods to getting wounded.
