Mike Richardson, founder and former CEO of Dark Horse Comics, has announced his next act: He plans to create a museum dedicated to the history of the pioneering comics publisher as well as a showplace for his collection of pop culture items, including props from the Alien and Predator movies, Pamela Anderson’s costume from Barb Wire, and more.
“I’m going to build it around comics, but it’s also going to be around film, toys, and pop culture,” Richardson told the Oregonian. “I have a big sports collection, and that might go in there as we expand.”
The museum will be housed in a 14,000 square foot building in downtown Milwaukie, Oregon, that once held the online store for the retail chain Things From Another World (see “Dark Horse Shutting Down Retail Chain“). The building has a corner display window with full-sized models of a Predator and two Xenomorphs, making it something of a local landmark, and Dark Horse still rents space on an upper floor.
At 75, Richardson is looking to inspire the next generation of creators, so in addition to exhibits, the museum will offer guest speakers, workshops, and classes in art, writing, and filmmaking.
Dark Horse replaced Richardson with a new CEO in March (see “Richardson Ousted”).
