Warhammer 40K: 4 Big Questions About 11th Edition

Goatboy here with some questions I worry about in 40K’s new 11th Edition. We’re all going to find the answers together.

I am not fretting all night about these 11th Edition questions, but I wonder how it will all go as we continue to throw dice during the early days of next Edition.  So sit back, pull up a comfy chair my fellow 40K fanatics, and get ready to tell me I shouldn’t worry about these things.

Detachments, Missions, & Repetitive Play

I worry that we end up playing the same mission over and over as certain armies and detachments will be used all the time. Once players find the best combos this just locks in the game each time and could get pretty boring or pretty upsetting if the match up is a bad one for you.  I know with the secondaries you always have a chance but it does feel like it could be an issue.  I think the idea of creating primary missions based on army style but will just have to play games, figure things out, and plan on getting wrecked a few games before you figure it out.

Will Vehicles Dominate 11th Edition?

Tanks can hit so hard and having less places to hide makes me worry will go back to the parking lot environment.  I played my last few games in 10th versus some crazy tank armies and if this game just pushes that sort of build more will it be fun?  Having to chew thru so many frames will be a rough thing to deal with as some armies just can’t kill enough tanks to make it matter.  Will we need to make sure our armies are designed to kill everything?  Will we see the meta shift heavily between tournaments as players and areas figure out what is best?

Fast Dice & Precision

Precision attacks are going to be a rough one to stomach in armies with access to it a lot.  If you look at the Emperor’s Children army they have so many options to throw out Precisions attacks.  It is going to be a wild one when you can throw a lot of attacks into the enemy character and cause a pile of saves that are kinda no longer getting lost.  You throw out 10 Precision wounds and have the opponent roll all 10 – the 1’s-2’s will be pointed directly at the leader and then watch as the rest scatters through the enemy.  It will be interesting to see and I wonder if will see less “Precision” rules as a whole going to a unit and instead limiting it to specific models and attacks.

Standard GW Terrain Maps VS Custom Event Layouts?

I wonder as the game continues to shift around if will see the same sort of – WTC vs GW vs UKTC type of deployment fight.  It is an interesting thing to look at and shifts what armies work and what doesn’t do well in specific events.  With the objectives becoming area terrain could we see things shift from 5 pieces to less on the battlefield?  Will this even work with the current mission load outs we have right now?  Will this not matter as everyone just goes the GW way and forces their current terrain into that set up?

Are these valid issues to think about?  Should we just let 11th happen and see what falls out?  Are you going to be still throwing dice at the end of the summer if things aren’t cleaned up?  Should we just wait till a true Codex comes out so we can see what the design is going to be?
