The official Frostpunk tabletop RPG from Catalyst Game Labs and 11 bit studios is headed for a retail launch at the end of the month.

Summer might be heating up, but the world of tabletop RPGs is getting a lot colder, thanks to the imminent release of Catalyst Game Labs’ Frostpunk RPG, a tabletop adaptation of the unrelenting survival RTS/sim.

After a wildly successful Kickstarter and time enough to finish up work on the final product, the game is poised for a wide release at the end of the month. So if you want to dig into the rich world of Frostpunk, with its many catastrophes and unending winter, you’ll want to keep an eye out (or check with your FLGS for pre-orders), because the game is coming very, very soon.

Frostpunk RPG – Get Ready To Die In The Cold

If you’re familiar at all with Frostpunk, you know how unforgiving the game can be. It puts you in unenviable positions and says “now survive” in the best way. It’s the kind of game where you have to really safeguard your settlement and think about what actually is “for the greater good.” I love it, it’s a fun time, though you can often lose hours to the game.

The same can likely be said of the tabletop game. Which was created with the harsh world (and the focus on the setting) in mind. Your settlement is the heart of the game, and how your characters can benefit it (or condemn it) determines what kind of a game you’re playing.

“Catalyst Game Labs has partnered with 11 bit studios to bring you Frostpunk: The Roleplaying Game, a gripping society-building game that features intense decision-making, survival challenges, and difficult questions that are at the heart of the acclaimed video game.

You find yourself in the vast, unforgiving frostland, where the landscape is dominated by endless expanses of ice and towering, jagged, snowy mountains. The ground is a solid sheet of ice, cracked and treacherous, stretching out as far as the eye can see. Snow blankets everything in a thick, suffocating layer, obscuring landmarks and turning the world into a disorienting white maze. You will play a character and choose a job that helps contribute to the betterment of the city. Just like in the video game, you will have to make difficult decisions between morality and survival.”

To that end, you’ll use Catalyst Games’ new Dice Core system. Described as a “medium-weight roleplaying” system, it’s supposed to be simple but meaningful. You roll a pool of three dice, pulling from the d4 all the way up to a d12. Depending on how you do, there’s all sorts of different ways to interpret the outcome.
