To Replace ‘Ice Cream Man’ Writer W. Maxwell Prince

Oni Press has announced that Ben H. Winters will replace Ice Cream Man writer W. Maxwell Prince as the writer for Oni’s flagship Archie comic as the publisher launches a new set of licensed Archie comics (see “Archie Licenses IP to Oni Press”). As previously announced, the artists for the series will be Fábio Moon and Nick Cagnetti, and Stuart Immonen is the cover artist for Archie #1, which will be released in September 2026.

The new Archie series starts off at a local film festival that goes sideways, taking Archie on a trip through the past, present, and future of Riverdale and the people who live there, while Jughead tries to solve the mystery at the heart of the event. In a nod to Archies past, the 32-page comic will include puzzles and pin-up pages.

Winters is a novelist whose work includes the Last Policeman trilogy, Underground Airlines, and the New York Times best-seller Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. The first volume of The Last Policeman won an Edgar Award. He broke into comics as the main writer for Oni’s EC Cruel Universe series, which was nominated for the 2025 Eisner Award for Best Anthology.

Oni has also announced two other Archie series: Sabrina the Teenage Witch, by writer Corinna Bechko and artist Kano, which will launch in October with a main cover by Kano, and Archie in Hell, by Patrick Horvath and Tyler Crook, which will debut in November with a cover by Crook. The launches come just ahead of the 85th anniversary of the first appearance of Archie Andrews, in Pep Comics #22 in December 1941.
