Goatboy here and let me tell you I have played through so many edition changes. These are some of the most memorable for us Grimdark old-timers!
It has been a wild ride if you’ve played 40K for a while with different versions of the game causing all kinds of havoc when a big 40k event comes out right before or right after. The drive to play an event that either has a massive shift in rules or a complete overhaul can be such a wild adventure. Let me give ya some stories about events in the past that either said players play new editions or we had to play something old while not looking at the new stuff.
ATC – 8th Edition era – aka Flyer Armageddon
I remember when 8th edition came out and the entire game shifted completely. All the units were changed, the interactions were updated, and it was a completely new game. Everyone got updated Digital rules and ATC was coming a few weeks after the new game came out. The event organizers (correctly I might add) decided to forgo any painting requirements and let us play the new game. The ATC is the American Team Championship so it is a team based game. This time around each Marine player could play an army – which means you could have Space Wolves, Blood Angels, etc in your army group. The Storm Raven was a flyer that poured out a ton of firepower mixed with some powerful melee options inside of it. You could see how an event where you allowed all the Marines to play meant you played some games where all match ups had 3+ flyers in their armies. Suffice to say it was a rather insane time frame especially since the Fire Raptor was allowed and thus even the Chaos Variants showed up. This was also the event where I met and beat up Adam
Adepticon – Team event – 10th Edition – When More Dakka Arrived
Do you remember More Dakka? It came out right before last years Adepticon and they decided to let it ride in both the Champs and the Team Event. My team had dodged it all even but our last round we went up against it. Let me tell you it was a wild trip into dumpster town as we took rockets, bullets, and just a ton of damage. Of course the detachment got instantly nuked last week but still it was such a mean little slap in the face.
Chaos Space Marines – 2nd Edition to 3rd Edition – The Great Unraveling
I remember my first game with Warhammer 40K. I was Magic player who worked at a local comic book shop during my College years. I saw the Warhammer stuff on the wall and thru a friend decided to jump into the game right at the end of 2nd Edition. I got a Chaos Space Marines box with all metal models and proceeded to get my butt handed to me when some random Psychic card blew away Abaddon. It was a wild time to play that game and then all of a sudden get thrown into 3rd Edition, a wave of new friends, and learning to build that old metal Land Speeder with Rubber bands.
What old editions do you remember? What crazy games did you have and then watch as all your old tactics disappeared when a new edition came out? What do you miss the most?
Don’t Miss:
