The Legend of Heroes series, better known as the ‘Trails of X’ series of well-loved JRPGs, is getting its very own TTRPG. Today, in fact.

The Trails series of games, also known as the Legend of Heroes, has its very own tabletop RPG now. That’s right, the world of Zemuria, which you’ve possibly explored in games like Trails of Cold Steel, or Trails in the Sky, or Trails from Zero, or any of the dozen or so other games in the beloved JRPG series, is available for you to play on the tabletop, with its own bespoke RPG engine.

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Destiny – A Tabletop Version Of ‘Trails’

This one slipped under the radar, but here we are. The Trails games are legendary. They’re also long – you have at least 1.72 Kingdom Hearts series worth of lore and stories to dive into to get the whole thing. But Falcom’s legendary franchise gives you a new way to do that with the tabletop version, Legend of Heroes: Trails of Destiny.

This uses the ‘Promethium System 2.0’, which is an in-depth, skill-based system that boils down to putting together a handful of bonus dice from various sources, as well as a single d20 and rolling and hoping for the best. Just to give you an idea of the scale of the game, your bonus dice range from the humble d4 all the way up through the d100. And that’s fine, because target numbers also range over quite a bit, from 5 (why even roll) all the way to 150, which is the “Ascendant” difficulty.

Yeah, it’s that kind of system. It’s about as in-depth as the Trails games can get. You can check out a 25-ish page sample of the rules to get a feel for it.

“The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Destiny is the definitive tabletop role-playing game that brings the sweeping political intrigue and emotional storytelling of the Trails series to your gaming table. Drawing from the rich tapestry of nations, factions, and characters that have defined Falcom’s beloved franchise, Trails of Destiny invites players to forge their own sagas in a world where every choice echoes across borders. Filled with official Falcom artwork and stunning original illustrations, the book delves deep into the lore of Zemuria, filled with never before categorized timelines, information, and lore.”

I mean, obviously, this book is aimed at fans of the Trails series. I think if you’ve never tried one out before, a lot of the book is going to be completely new to you. Which isn’t bad, necessarily. After all, people still get into One Piece, and that’s nigh-impenetrable at this point.

Suffice it to say, the book is already number one on DriveThruRPG. Fans of the game will find a complex RPG awaiting them. And hey, if you’ve never heard of this video game series, but want an extremely crunchy, crispy game, it’s at least worth checking out the preview to get an idea.
